Fences serve many purposes:
- keep our loved ones inside and safe,
- keep unwanted persons out, and
- Most importantly, they add privacy and an appealing architectural detail to one’s property.
How Is A Fence Restored?
– by Cleaning, Painting, Sealing
The process is straightforward – We first determine whether the fence is new and has a previous finish and put forth a plan of action. We start with a thorough cleaning. If the fence has never been stained and is dirty, we use powerful, plant-safe fence cleaners that remove years of oxidation, graying, mold, and mildew, revealing the wood grain again and the inherent beauty of your fence! We follow the thorough cleaning with a brightener and neutralizer that accomplishes three things:
- Wood brightener neutralizes the alkaline, stopping them from working and attacking the new fence finish.
- Fence wood brighteners naturally lighten the wood’s appearance.
- Neutralizing and brightening will aid stain absorption by opening the wood’s pores. This is important for a longer-lasting finish as well as a uniform appearance.
With the wood pores open and the surfaces neutralized, the wood will absorb the maximum amount of stain and sealer possible. That’s how we restore a fence that has never been stained before but was dirty.
For fences that were stained before, we ask our customers if they have a record of the previous products. If they do, we gently clean all fence surfaces, ensuring to remove all mold, mildew, and contaminants. Allow the fence to dry thoroughly, and reapply the said product. If they don’t have a record, we gently remove the previous product, neutralize, brighten, finishing up with thorough staining and sealing.
Our fence restoration method lays the groundwork for a simple maintenance program that can be followed easily and will be cost-effective long term.
A side note: All our fence cleaning, stripping, and brightening detergents are sourced from professional deck restoration detergent suppliers. We never use products from big box stores. We use products that are tailor formulated by professional deck restoration suppliers for specific species of wood, the specific condition of the wood, and specific coatings on wood surfaces. These costly yet necessary products make our fence cleaning, stripping, and neutralizing results extraordinary instead of ordinary.
Fence Cleaning And Painting
Applying solid colour fence stains is an easy way to immediately improve the appearance of very weathered fencing. Whether cedar or pine, a solid stain paint job will ensure an even appearance, and if the right color is selected can vastly improve the way the fence blends into the property and enhances it at the same time.
Our fence cleaning and painting services offer the same level of craftsmanship. We thoroughly clean all fencing, neutralize and brighten to open wood pores. Once wood pores are open and ready to take the solid fence stain, we apply two coats of fence stain respecting manufacturer interval times between coats. We don’t cut corners when no one is looking; we paint each fence as if it were our own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you provide colors to choose from?
Yes, we can furnish plenty of stain color samples.
Is water-based better than oil-based stain?
We recommend using a penetrating oil-based stain and sealer on all exterior wood. Not only will it not peel or blister in the future, but maintenance will become simple and inexpensive compared to water-based.
What is the difference between toner, semi-transparent, semi-solid, and solid stain?
Simply put, they offer different opacity levels from left to right – Toner being the most translucent, then Semi-transparent, accentuating the grain and adding color via trans-oxide pigments. Think of trans-oxide pigments as SPF for your fence; the more trans-oxide pigments, the better the fence will hold up to UV rays., Semi-solid works well at holding up to UV damage, and lastly, a solid stain which is completely opaque.
Do you perform fence repairs?
Yes, we perform all types of fence repairs. We also install fence post caps, repair sagging gates, etc.
Can I supply my stain?
Yes, as long as it is a quality oil-based stain and sealer like Expert Stain and Seal.
What is the best time of year to stain my fence?
Fences are less finicky to stain than decks, as they don’t get as hot in the summer. That said – Temperatures have to be over 45 degrees to pressure wash and over 50 to stain and seal – so anytime weather permits, other than that, avoid pollen season. Cooler temps are always best as the vehicle in which the stain and sealer are suspended doesn’t evaporate as quickly.
